The popularity of candles throughout history has been consistent, although candles can still be found in almost every home, nowadays they are mainly used to eliminate odor, create an ambiance or simply just an aesthetic decorative piece.
The usage and necessity of candles nowadays are very different from when they were first invented.Candles have been a source of light since about 500 BC. Back then, candles were made by dipping rolled papyrus into melted animal fat to create wicked candles. This candle making method had an unpleasant smell and produced dark and dirty smoke, but because animal fat (tallow) was cheap, it was the most commonly used type of candle until about the 1500’s.
In the 1500’s, beeswax was discovered and introduced as a cleaner alternative as it had less smoke and burned longer and brighter. Although it was a better alternative, beeswax was still more expensive and only used by the rich or during religious ceremonies in Europe.
Over time, other temporary wax alternatives were discovered for candle making including spermaceti, a waxy material obtained from the sperm whale.Up until 1830, candles remained an expensive commodity until German Chemist Karl Von Reichenbach discovered Paraffin Wax. His discovery allowed mass-production of candles that offered a high-performing burn and were less expensive.
Then in 1879, electricity was introduced with the creation of light-bulbs. This allowed more people to shift from candlelight to electricity thus shifting candles from main source of light to more of an optional aesthetic piece as they started being offered in different shapes and colors. The shift in the usage of candle made way for scented candles around the 1980’s.
Candles of all different shapes, sizes and colours were being created and the first scented candles became available to the public. Up to present scented candles are a popular choice when trying to create an atmosphere in our homes. Certain scents such as fresh laundry or fruit loops can also trigger great sense memories which means that the candles are a great tool for aromatherapy.
